Colonial Kitchen Makeover

Located within the walls of a beautifully designed and well-crafted Williamsburg Colonial-style Eastern Shore home was the out-of-place, introverted, compartmentalized, and poorly laid out builder-grade kitchen in desperate need of a redo. Nothing about this dated 1990’s kitchen spoke to the architecture of the rest of the home. Walls were removed and doorways widened to unite the adjacent dining and family rooms to this high-traffic kitchen located in the core of the home, making way for this bespoke transformation.  Heavy fluted columns, crown moldings, and keystones were crafted to match the existing details for a seamless transition. An avid cook, the owner had very specific requests for flow and function to meet her needs, one of which was a large, elevated island to accommodate both the owner’s heights. All cabinetry was Amish custom-crafted, including scrolled feet to match an existing antique server, divided light glass cabinet doors to showcase an extensive blue and white stoneware collection, and Toe-kick uplighting to highlight the custom cabinet base details. A custom-designed quartz backsplash and carefully selected lighting fixtures and hardware serve as jewelry to the newly opened up light-filled space. This project also includes a Butler’s pantry, which serves as an ante-kitchen complete with additional appliances and the owner’s office nook, all custom-crafted out of heart pine, with brick flooring referencing a farmhouse component to the overall aesthetic.
