Back to Practice AreaThe project incorporates innovative and sustainable site design solutions that minimize environmental impacts while supporting long-term operations. A cellular confinement system was used for the Delmarva Power maintenance access road, providing a durable pervious surface that reduced the project’s impervious footprint and eliminated the need for traditional stormwater management facilities. This approach was particularly beneficial in an area where conventional stormwater treatment practices were not feasible, while still providing the load-bearing capacity required for utility maintenance vehicles.
To further enhance the site’s environmental benefits, a pollinator-friendly seed mix was planted beneath the solar array. This native vegetation supports pollinator habitat, promotes biodiversity, improves soil health, and reduces long-term maintenance needs. It also helps retain stormwater and prevent soil erosion. Located within the monarch butterfly migration corridor, the site provides valuable habitat connectivity, creating “stepping-stone” resources that support monarch butterflies and other pollinators during seasonal migration.
