Rediscovering Our Homes: Kitchen

It’s time to reimagine your kitchen!

Whether you’re an aspiring Food Network star or you have your favorite restaurant on speed-dial, chances are you’re spending more time in the kitchen recently.

Kitchens have evolved from a hidden portion of the home to the home’s central hub of activity. If you are feeling underwhelmed by your space, take a step back, and think about how you interact with your kitchen.

1. Can you reorganize within the existing space?

Begin thinking about your space strategically and work to identify areas that could be more efficient.

    • – Where in the kitchen is your coffee maker in relationship to your mugs?
    • – Are the pots and pans near the stove?
    • – Are commonly used pantry items easily accessible?
    • – Are there items in your kitchen you rarely use? Could they be relocated to create space for the items you use more frequently?

Careful planning and organizing can help you create a functional space that allows you to be more efficient.

2. Can you reallocate adjacent spaces?

Thoughtful reorganization of unused or underutilized adjacent spaces can help you expand your kitchen without adding to your home’s existing footprint. Consider incorporating the underutilized dining room into your kitchen space. With a few modifications, you could double the size of your pantry, expand your counter space, or add a large island for cooking, food prep, or dining all while creating a more open floor plan!

3. Is a full renovation right for you?

When considering a full kitchen renovation, it is important to keep your household’s needs top of mind. If your functional needs are being met in your current kitchen, you may be able to make impactful aesthetic enhancements, without a complete renovation. A new countertop, resurfaced cabinetry, incorporation of natural light, and updated appliances can go a long way.

If there are structural shortcomings in your kitchen’s layout including confined or wasted spaces, limited storage, and workspace concerns, you may want to consider a full renovation to maximize the use and enjoyment of your space.
