Rediscovering Our Homes: Recreation & Relaxation

It’s time to reconnect, recharge, and relax!

With much of the focus on working from home these days, let’s not forget the need for “Playing at Home” as well!

Summer is officially here, and you have likely found yourself and your family with more downtime. Carefully planned areas in your home can fill your spare time with activities that allow you to recharge, reconnect, and relax. To design a space that helps your family to do just that, think about the types of activities that you enjoy.

Recreation inspired by gathering!

Does your ideal night off include a family game or movie night? Does a little friendly competition fuel you? By creating a hybrid room, you can accommodate several different activities.  This space could house a pool table, bar area, game table, and media center, keeping you entertained for hours.

The beauty of a hybrid room is that it can continuously evolve with your family. By creating a space with a less restrictive floor plan, the possibilities are limitless. Features you should consider in your hybrid space are electrical needs for multiple media sources, versatile flooring, and storage.

When space is at a premium, it is important to consider convertible and multi-functional furniture arrangements to join or separate activities, and increase or decrease floor space per activity needs.

Recreation inspired by movement!

Missing the gym and feeling unmotivated to workout at home? Having a dedicated and inspiring space in your home for exercise can lead you to be more committed to your fitness routine.

Whether you have a spare room, garage, or attic you are looking to transform, minor renovations can dramatically enhance your experience. When designing your home gym, pay close attention to the finishes. Not only should this room be easy to clean, but it should also inspire you to get moving!

If you are replacing the flooring, consider adding a shock absorption layer, your joints will thank you! Take advantage of wall space and save on storage by putting your workout equipment on display. Incorporate technology for music and virtual workouts with trainers and friends.

Recreation inspired by tranquility!

While it is important to have space for lively recreational activities, it is just as necessary to have a space to unwind separately from the commotion of shared spaces. Creating quiet areas within your home to read, rest, and recharge, prove beneficial for your mental wellness.

Work to identify unused spaces around your home that you can transform into pockets of peace and quiet. Unused closets can be transformed into reading nooks or small studios for creating. When designing these spaces, maximize natural light whenever possible and include subtle calming colors.
