Captain’s Hill

Back to Practice Area

Melding coastal shingle, New England country, and English cottage styles, the goal was to create a distinctive, one-of-a-kind family home while blending the Owner’s large program of spaces in an exterior façade of a much smaller scale home. Tucking large areas of second floor space within low, sweeping rooflines not only created visual interest, but also avoided full-height, two-story walls which could have made the house appear larger in scale.

The interior was designed to emulate old coastal beach cottages of the past. Resting on a rather small north facing lot, this property required careful planning to accommodate the home, garage/carriage house, pool, and cabana. Although not a direct waterfront lot, the design captures vignettes of surrounding coastal bays, distant islands, and the Ocean City, Maryland skyline. Panoramic views of these areas can be enjoyed from the observatory tower strategically placed on the southeast corner of the home.
