Evoking the vernacular of shingled seaside homes and cottages of the New England Coast, this new oceanfront home on the Delaware seashore melds traditional forms and elements with graceful curves and subtle whimsical details. The owners desired a more conventional solution to the typical large oversized beach house on stilts approach.

While an inverted plan was conceived to enhance views from the highest floor’s main living areas, the streetside presence disguises this massing and creates a more humble pedestrian and site-friendly relationship. Wrapped in shingles from walls to rooftop, the subtle natural colors and textures blend into the coastal environment. Multiple covered and open-air porches and outdoor living spaces blur the lines between inside and out, all capturing the sensory and visual panorama of the surrounding dunes and ocean at its purist.
