Crisfield Public Library

Back to Practice Area

Serving the waterside community of Crisfield, the southernmost town in Maryland, the Crisfield Library replaced an aging limited facility while providing nearly four times the amount of space. The library serves as a community center and information hub for this small community by providing a 21st-century facility that offers opportunities to engage with technology and alternative education programs. The impacts of Hurricane Sandy on the town have been well documented, and the library was designed for resilience and to endure the harsh coastal environment. The building was elevated above grade to address floodplain issues, allowing it to serve the community without impact during coastal events. Key programmatic elements include private rooms for study and tutoring, a dedicated makerspace, a large children’s area and staff work areas. The facility also offers a large meeting room available for nonprofits and community groups, as well as the occasional wedding. Patrons can enjoy panoramic views from the large outdoor deck overlooking the scenic Daugherty Creek which flows into the Tangier Sound, an arm of the Chesapeake Bay. The design takes its cues from the regional vernacular of waterfront industries and watermen shanties which are integral to Crisfield’s heritage.
