DuPont Environmental Education Center at the Russell W. Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge
Back to Practice AreaOverlooking the wildlife refuge, this four-story facility sits on 212 acres and educates visitors on local urban wildlife. Visitors enter the facility by way of a pedestrian bridge. The Education Center includes multimedia exhibits, a wet lab classroom, multi-purpose room, offices, and viewing platforms showcasing vistas of the surrounding area where the City of Wilmington, the Christina River, and the Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge meet. This Center helps to create and preserve wildlife habitat on the edge of an urban, restored wetland along the Christina River, as well as promote walking through its connection to the Riverwalk and the trails provided throughout the wetlands. The facility’s outdoor areas flow seamlessly and include a ten-acre botanical garden with an outdoor amphitheater, a freshwater tidal pond with a quarter-mile boardwalk, and wildlife-viewing platforms. Architectural services for this project were completed in association with GWWO, Inc. / Architects.
