Pinehurst Elementary School
Back to Practice AreaThanks to the availability of ESSER funds, the pandemic-era federal funding administered through the State of Maryland, Wicomico County Public Schools was able to make much-needed upgrades to the mechanical and electrical systems and the building envelope at Pinehurst Elementary School. The school had undergone five additions since being constructed in 1935, but failing mechanical and electrical systems and a lack of energy-efficient exterior windows and doors plagued the aging original building. This project will be completed in six phases, as the school must remain occupied throughout construction.
Becker Morgan Group worked with the design-build contractor, owner, and mechanical and electrical engineers to devise phasing plans based on the existing systems to be replaced. Late in the design phase, the owner expanded the project scope to add a civil engineering design for a portable building for swing space, demolish the plaster ceiling and replace the sloped roof in the main gym, fire suppression system implementation at the recently renovated administration suite, and other MEP scope requiring architectural coordination. Becker Morgan Group contracted with a roof consultant to assist with roof investigations, coordinated discussions and reviews with the fire marshal and worked with the full project team to prepare drawings and specifications for the added scope with no extension of the design phase schedule.
